HaRav Zalman Baruch Melamed

Rav Zalman Baruch Melamed is one of the most influential Torah leaders in Israel today, his voice resonating across the Religious Zionist world and increasingly within the Charedi world as well.
For decades, he has led with a rare combination of clarity and optimism, faith and realism, strength and warmth. He does not respond to crisis with fear, retreat, or denunciation. He teaches how Torah responds with responsibility, and with an unwavering belief that this generation has a unique role to play in the unfolding of geulah.

A leader shaped by Torat Eretz Yisrael

Born in Tel Aviv in 1937, Rav Melamed studied at Kfar Haroeh and was among the founders of Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh before joining Mercaz HaRav. There, he became a close disciple of Rav Tzvi Yehuda HaCohen Kook, absorbing a Torah vision rooted in faith, nationhood, and the kedusha of Eretz Israel. In 1965, HaRav Tzvi Yehuda requested that he become the Rav of the first-year students in the yeshiva. Rav Melamed was the youngest Rav chosen to teach in the yeshiva, the first whose Torah learning took place in Religious Zionist institutions, and the first Merkaz HaRav student to become a Rav in the yeshiva. With Rav Tzvi Yehuda’s blessing, Rav Melamed founded Yeshivat Beit El in 1978, and has since raised over five decades of Torah Scholars on what was originally a bare hilltop in Yehudah Vshomron.

"Torah Giants – The Nation's Need"

First and foremost, Yeshivat Beit El focuses on raising great Torah scholars. The intense study and rigorous schedule enable the development and cultivation of first-class Torah giants. The Yeshiva provides an environment fully supportive of Torah growth. The Beit Midrash is packed with young scholars taking their first steps in the Torah world, alongside scores of older, experienced, and accomplished Talmidei Chachamim.

“Torah was not given so we would be afraid.”

At the core of Rav Melamed’s philosophy is Ayin Tova — the disciplined ability to see reality through faith rather than panic. He teaches his students to judge others favorably, to believe that the good overpowers the evil, and to face painful national events with steadfast Emunah.
This worldview produces Torah scholars who are not threatened by modernity, secular society, or complexity. Rav Melamed teaches that modern tools, cultural changes, and national upheaval are not accidents; they are part of the divine process of Geula unfolding before our eyes, and they must be approached thoughtfully and responsibly.

“We are not meant to hide from the world. We are meant to lead it with Torah.”

Achdut without erasing difference

Rav Melamed’s vision of unity is about building a nation in which everyone, regardless of their background or approach to Torah observance, works together for the common good of Am Yisrael. This approach calls for tolerance, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the Jewish people’s future.

Rav Melamed has initiated and led forums bringing together leading rabbis from across the religious spectrum for unprecedented dialogue, including meetings between Dati Leumi and Charedi rabbinic leadership. Since October 7th, conversations about Torah, responsibility, and our future have intensified, particularly focusing on direct dialogue between Charedi communities, who do not serve in the IDF, and Dati Leumi Avreichim, who do.

“Unity does not mean we all think the same. It means we refuse to give up on one another.”

Leadership through acknowledgment

Rav Melamed repeatedly warns against leadership built on anger, separation, or moral superiority.

“If we reject every part of Am Yisrael, we will be left incomplete. And that is not what Hashem wants from us.”

Rav Melamed consistently teaches that Am Yisrael is built through many forms of contribution, and that no single group carries the nation alone. Torah learning, national service, doctors, scientists, and high-tech workers each have their own unique part in bringing the Geula that Hashem has planned for us.

“We are like many parts of a living body; when one part weakens, the whole nation limps. When each part carries its responsibility with integrity, the nation stands upright.”

Rav Melamed’s leadership calls on his students to recognize this reality, reinforce the understanding that all fields of life stem from Torah commitment, and lead with humility.

A Torah that lives in the public sphere

In 1988, Rav Melamed founded Arutz Sheva, Israel’s first independent radio station, at the height of the secular Zionist influence. It was created to strengthen Religious Zionist values and introduce faith, optimism, and national responsibility into the public sphere.

Under Rav Melamed’s direct guidance, alumni of Yeshivat Beit El are known for being well-rounded and balanced, combining Torah knowledge with strong character development. Many of these graduates have gone on to become leaders in various fields: the Rabbinate, the IDF, Medicine, High-tech, education, community, and national leadership.

Many alumni establish community outreach centers that connect thousands of Jews to their Torah origins every year, through prayer, learning, Shabbat meals for hundreds, and moments of inspiration for those who feel distant.

Middot as a measure of Torah greatness

Rav Melamed consistently teaches that Torah scholarship without refined character is incomplete.
He often cites the Gemara:

“The Torah scholars of Eretz Yisrael treat one another with pleasantness.”

Humility, Derech Eretz, responsibility, and care for others are not optional ideals; they are the visible markers of true Torah leadership. This insistence on middot is what makes Rav Melamed’s students recognizable wherever they go.

A generation meant to unite

As Israel faces its greatest challenges, Rav Melamed’s call for unity, thoughtful leadership, and strong Torah values has never been more urgent. Rav Melamed teaches that this generation, despite all its tension, diversity, and challenges, is not a mistake. On the contrary, it is a unique part of the divine plan for Geula.
